vfd or converter?

I am looking to get a 3 hp 3phase mixer motor running with a 1 phase supply. I found a few threads on the subjuct, but was just wondering what some of you guys think is the best investment. I am I correct in thinking that there is a vfd that is also a converter? Should I just bite the bullet and get a phase converter? Any help would be great!
 
Allen bradley makes a powerflex VFD that will run off single phase and control a 3phase motor. Specifically designed for this purpose at a relatively low cost. Some of the old allen bradley drives would accomplish this feat also but were not meant for it. I know there are not alot of AB fans around here but thats my two cents. I can get you info if you like.
 
Almost every VFD manufacturer offers a 1-phase input with a 3-phase output. In general the VFD is 1 or 2 sizes larger than the 3-phase only model. Make sure you take into account the starting torque for your load, mixers often start fully loaded.

you can probably find a VFD that will do this. many vfd manufacturers out there. a vfd will probably be less money and more reliable. it may also offer the benefits of being able to vary the motor speed.

Almost every VFD manufacturer offers a 1-phase input with a 3-phase output and require no derating below 3-5 Hp.
Yes, mixers are loaded most all the time and regular VFD's have very little torque output at low speeds. Initial starting may require a higher speed setting then be adjusted to required speed. Good VFD's can be programmed to do this.
