when installing vfd's is a starter required by the nec ? and is it installed before or after the vfd? i was going to use the cutler hammer svx9000 since this is what is used here. i had notice that they haven't used any of the vfd type cable for the motors and was wondering if it is needed since they are all between 5-15 hp. also i don't see any filters or reactors for the vfd. thanks for any info on this subject.

In the case of VFD brand "Wires" being used that along has been in many
good threads, here. Might I suggest a good query on the subject, I suggest an advance search.

VFD's threads have been well presented here and in great detail as to your the nature of your subject matter.

You can set your overload percentage as one of the parameters when you install the VFD. The VFD will also take the place of a starter as you can control it with a variety of start/stop/run configurations. You will still need to have a disconnect though.

VFD's can be ordered with reactors and a built in disconnect switch and they take the place of a starter. Years ago, the manufacturers doubled the warentee if a reactor was installed before the VFD for surge protection, then they started including them with the VFD. A few manufacturers also required using their cable between the VFD and the motor, but that has disappeared.
