Does anyone know of any sources that really go into detail on VFD's and how they affect power quality, power factor, harmonics, and such.

Thanks in Advance:
Steve

For harmonics and such, try MTE and TCI's website for how line reactors improve line harmonics. I am not aware of power factor correction being used with VFD's.

Hope this helps.

ABB doesn't seem to have much except drive specific training.

MTE and TCI looks like they might have some info, but I'm afraid some of it might be somewhat biased toward selling their product.

But those are better than anything I have found. Thanks for the replies.

Steve

depends on the type of AC-DC conversion the VFD is using.

most of the newer VFDs are 12 and 18 pulse converters, which means less harmonics on the 5th and 7th. if the facility already have a lot of 5th and 7th harmonics, it would be better to have a study taken just to determine how much those VFDs will affect the overall power supply. especially if the VFDs will supply very large motor loads
