For HIGH SPEED INTERNET USERS ONLY!!!

This file is huge (about 150 MB). If you have never seen it before, it really is quite amazing. It is a flash over incident, which ultimatley causes some very strange things. It is named "The Hartford County Incident".

If you have a DSL, click the link and check back in a few hours. Very much worth it.

The guy in the bucket didn't seem impressed that he had a front row seat to the show

Holy crap!!!!

I am completely amazed.

Why didn't a fuse or something blow?
What caused this "incident"?

....a million questions....any answers?

It is the primary colliding with the secondary. 34KV to 13 KV.

Ryan,

Do you know what was happening at the houses?

Judging from the firemen milling about, the gutters exploding all over the place, the service laterals smoking....I say that the houses were just about to catch on fire!

Seriously, I wonder what sort of damage occured INSIDE these homes...smoked vcrs, computers, TVs , etc?

I think this was in Bel Air, Maryland.
The only Harford Co. in the country with a Moores Mill Rd.

I checked on Goggle Earth, but could not pinpoint the exact location.

Bob,
it does not appear the ground rods did anything whatsoever to protect these homes.
If the line to line shorts aren't pulling enough current to open OCPDs, then is there any reason to expect the a line to ground fault would?

My point was more sarcasm about what the purposes of the GE system is in the first place. It is pretty clear that it serves no purpose whatsoever in the case of this type of problem, and little if any in the case of lightning, despite what some people may believe.

I got to the end of page one and this exact thought was going thru my mind, I was going to ask if the ground rods were of any help at all, but Bob beat me to it. Waste of copper and steel and sweat.
