Can people please comment if they see any code violation problems with this installation? (Other than the obvious safety violation of the power strip hanging from the plugged in cord). I would particulary be interested in inspectors comments on why or why not this would be allowed. This is a vendor provided display. Assume the power strip is legal with a 6' cord and plugged into a hardwired duplex outlet. Another question I would have is if this is prewired at the factory, does it have to come as a listed UL assembly, or just all the components must be UL listed?

Thanks!

What makes you think that is a safety issue? I wonder if the manufacturer's instructions prohibit this.

What code section is being violated?

Is this an assembly that is commonly UL listed? The code only requires certain things be listed.

OH, it hanging, I thought there for a second they had finally invented a levitating power strip. :D

The Fire Marshal would come closer to getting them than anyone because it's not part of the building wiring. If any of those cords go above a drop ceiling that would be a violation or if they are used as permanent wiring.

But in all fairness I think it's kind of neat the way it's suspended above the counter like that. If the guy is selling magic supplies that might work out. If he can make them disappear before the Fire Marshal sees them that would be a good trick.

Just a little levity about the levitating power strip. :)

WTF is it?

Besides that, what else is there to look at? I see a couple cords plugged into a power strip. Are you asking if that's a code violation? Is it inside a cabinet of some sort? Are you asking if it's illegal to plug stuff into power strips in a cabinet?

I'm confused.

Thanks for your responses, the reason for the confusion is shared. Sometimes the inspector or fire marshall allows this and sometimes they don't. Some state you can't run cord through structure (which I don't agree this is, it is a POS station or basically a cabinet with items on top) others say that the entire assembly (the POS station) must be UL listed as an assembly (which again I don't agree with). I just wanted to get some opinions from the site, without trying to create any bias.

Thanks again
