I have a four hundred foot run of 12-3 seowa cord. I have a 5 amp load for a pump. Would this be a big enough gauge for this application seeing this is s.o. Cord?

Your loop wire resistance is about 0.8*1.588 = 1.3 ohms. At 5 A this is about 6.5 V drop. But under startup your current might be 35 to 50 A. How well does the motor start is your concern. If it starts within about 2 seconds and you leave it run for long times it should not be a major problem.

I also came up with about a 6.5 volt drop. this was about a 7% drop for a 120 volt circuit and a 3.5% drop for a 240 volt circuit.

I agree that the motor start up could be a problem.

Is this a temporary installation or will it be permanent wiring? This seems like an awful long extension cord?
