I will be designing a 60,000 sq.ft. commercial building in Shanghai, and I intend on using a three phase service.

Web research indicates that voltages are 220V (l-n) for China but lists 110V (l-n) in the US. Since nominal voltage in the US is actually 120V (l-n), this leads me to believe that the nominal system voltage in china is 240 V (l-n), so a three phase, wye system would be 240/416V.

Does anyone have any insight on nominal system voltages for three phase systems in China?

I would not bet on anything in China. I have seen everything from US standard stuff to European standard stuff, to stuff I never even heard of before.

The short answer is 240V, in the systems and installations we have been involved in. Confirm this IN WRITING from your China representative.

Our China installations use a 10KV delta primary. Be forwarned that voltage levels in China can swing quite a bit, and you will need to design in the necessary protections (phase loss, undervoltage, etc) so that your voltage-sensitive equipment is not damaged.

I have seen a very wide variety of receptacles used over there.

Yep, I concur. Once saw a US plug wired for 48 VDC. Once saw a 220V euro plug wired for 115V us.

Jonrice,

I come from Shanghai China. There is only one nominal power system (low voltage) in China. That is 380Y/220V three phase (for residential 220V single phase). Not like United States, more than two nominal systems: 208Y/120V, 480Y/277V, 120/240V ....
The power system applied in China is simple. Basically, all receptacles, lights, small appliances etc (including commercial, industrial and residential buildings) are 220V single phase. Big units, machines, pumps need 380V three phase.

Hope this help.

Hmm. 220 to earth. That seems like a lot of energy in a residence.

I hope the receptacles are tamper-proofed.

Edit: " . . . and 380 line-to-line . . . " removed from first sentence.

Carl, You are right.
The frequency of power in China is 50HZ that is different from what we have in US (60HZ).
