Wal-Mart self check out counters with light poles.

Does the NEC require any special provisions for self checkout locations? Is there any GFCI requirements for receptacles or grounding requirements for the light poles in these locations?

No. I used to do electrical designs for Wal-Marts as recently as 2016, and there was nothing special about there electrical requirements. Not aware of any 2017 code updates that would affect that.

Just to clarify, are you talking about power poles and not light poles? Also, Wal-Mart construction drawings are typically pretty detailed and pretty clearly identify circuits requiring isolated grounds.

So the receptacle does not need to be GFCI protected and the light pole only needs to have an equipment ground attached?

Well it's been a few years for me, so their panel notes could have changed, but it used to be that if a circuit description in the panel schedule was followed by "(5)", the circuit required GFCI, and if it was a "(6)", the circuit required GFEP. If the engineer called out anything above code requirements, that's where I'd think you'd find it. Again though, most of these connections are pretty well detailed in WM's proto drawing sets. If you haven't been provided with any drawings, I'd request them. Even if this is a smaller renovation w/o engineered drawings, I'd imagine the store manager should be able to get you their typical details.
The OP is asking about NEC requirements, not specifications.

As 480parky points out, 210.8 is where you need to look.

422.5 (5)....does this not come into play ?

Do you know where "Vending Machine" definition was moved to in 2017.
Not sure, but I don't think typical self checkout at Wal Mart fits the definition as it appeared in 2014 NEC.

These don't dispense products or merchandise, you bring products/merchandise to them.
