holy crap...what's wrong with electricians
just bid a walgreens today, got a call from the GC that I was over $80k higher than the other quote that they got...

ok, let's talk...

quotables (all national accounts) $35k
general material (conduit, wire,etc) $30k

oh, these numbers are cost...no markup...no P&O...

labor hours....

I figured 2000....oh, he only figured 1000....

1000 man hours to do a walgreens? wtf is he smoking...

maybe just the power...but not the controls, burglar, fire, satellite, and other LV wiring that they want you to include...

I went over this with the GC, he knows i'm right...so the only question is if he wants to rake this guy over the coals, or have us do it...

oh, their SOW is pretty tight...not going to be a lot of extras...

Yes, a Walgreens is a great place to lose lots of money. Just ask the financiers of CES. ;)

There is a TON of time-killing details in a Walgreens. And unless you strike out all the low-voltage stuff from your contract, you will be doing that to, and there is a ton of it. On the one that I was involved in, we pulled all the low voltage except for the data com, and the low voltage sub came and terminated everything and provided and installed the equipment. We also did the fire alarm system complete. An actual employee of Walgreens installs the security system.

Really makes me wonder why the CG called you back. What was he fishing for??

Probably trying to figure out if he can either get Eric to give a little or if he thought the other guy could afford to finish the job if he awarded it to him.

I bid a Dollar Tree from a shell not to long ago. 1 of the other proposals was for half what the job should have been and another was $1,200. $1,200!!!

I have bid 3 of them and they ranged from 180k to 210k I lost the 210k by $2000. GC didnt even give a call to talk. It is getting tuff out there but the strong will survive. I believe 1000 man hrs is to low but 2000 is to as high as well

i actually think 2000 is low...besides the building, the service, underslab and general wiring...there is site lighting, all the LV wiring (satellite, data, lighting control, EMS, etc....

I think in reality, it would be more like 2200

the reason they called is 2 fold, we are doing other projects for them under our plumbing and our mechanical sides...we just priced a CVS and were $2k high...

but, mostly, it was because he knew that the other number was way low...

haven't heard back from him today, but we'll see what happens..

Children, behave. :)

When you got the info to bid the job, was all the info there? Seems like a lot of the work I've looked at lately has been scratched into a napkin while driving down the road at 90 MPH, at best. No details, no nothing. "'Bout how much to do this?"

"Do what? There's no electrical symbols on this at all...?"

there were 16 pages of electricals...8 of them just for the special systems...

Watch the progress...

I'm thinking of the last job I "ran" for the contractor I worked for...we were good at industrial stuff... and we were WAY low. So low the customer was concerned, but he had the brains to review the job with us, and we were awarded the job. We pulled double digit margins, the customer was very happy with the work, and I got a pat on the back.

Cookie cutter stuff like that is easy, especially if you done it a few times. Maybe he's done a few?

Watch and learn... maybe he's a moron, maybe he's desperate, maybe he's smart?
