Is a walk in beer cooler considered a damp or wet location. If so why and why does it come from the factory with fan motors, ballasts, tumb stone for fluorescent lights that are not weatherproof.

IMO it is not a wet or damp location. If a cooling means were to classify a building as "wet or damp" most every building would qualify.

In reality most cooling means act as dehumidifiers.

The definition of damp location does give "cold storage warehouses" as an example. However, if the AHJ did consider the location as damp, I wouldn't think the equipment would be required to be "weatherproof" per its definition.

I think most equipment installed in coolers by the manufacturer of the cooler would be listed equipment for use in that location. Possibly, the equipment is listed for use in damp locations, but will not necesarily be watertight or weatherproof.

Re: Walk in beer cooler

I think the true requirements for a damp location is that moisture has to be able to drain and not be allowed to build up in fixtures and junction box's, and the components of the fixtures have to be able to resist corrosion, where wet locations require all the above plus fixtures and boxes have to be rain tight and not allow water to enter them.
