We worked on a large commercial cooler yesterday that required a recep for heat-tape in the freezer section.

i couldn't find anything in the code about making it a gfci for the reason of being located in a cooler.

the closest reference i found was 550.13(E), which requires heat-tape receps to be GFCI protected, but that only applied to mobile homes.

i had a gfci installed anyway seeing as how the job was 2hrs away and i wasn't sure what inspector would say, but was i required to?

Sounds like you are talking about the heat tape on the freezer drain line, if so, I think the heat tape itself might require the GFCI, that or I'm just remembering wrong because like you, it's just how we did it, been a while. I do have one coming up in the next few weeks and will keep an eye out for it.
