How Do Most Contractors/inspectors View Pre-fab Walk-in Cooling Units That Are Prewired At The Factory Using Standard Metallic Boxes For The Refrigeration Unit Or For Lighting? Installed Wiring Is Approved For The Location, But Either The Metallic Boxes Or Raceway Fittings Used Are Not Listed For The Location. My Question Is This, Since The Wiring And Components Are Factory Installed Should The Associated Boxes And/or Raceway And Raceway Fittings Be Changed To Suit The Location? Assume Any Field Wiring Done Inside The Unit Is Code Compliant.

The NEC does not address any manufactured product anyway, so it is not a code issue.

I agree, and went through this with an inspector when I wired a 7-11 Store, the cooler they used was a pre-manufactured unit that came knocked down. All the I had to do on the job was connect together the pre-wired sections.

However the inspector wanted to fail the job do to the factories use of standard wiring methods and not wet location wiring.

Standard Metallic Boxes Are Not Approved For A Damp Location But They Are Installed In These Units All The Time. Any New Installations Are Installed For A Damp Location (art. 100) But I Just Question The Factory Installed Wiring Methods That Are Not Approved For Such A Location Subjected To Moisture. Can The Ahj Require That Such Installations Be Changed To Meet The Nec Requirements?

Would you require that a range, dishwasher or any other listed equipment be re-wired to meet the NEC?

It is also interesting to note that under the 2005 NEC standard FMC is allowed in wet locations.

I am checking into the boxes.

I do not find a NEC requirement that all equipment used in damp locations be listed for such.

314.15 requires boxes and conduit bodies used in wet locations to be listed for wet locations.
