It was run from the condenser locations to the interior mini split units
Would have been better if not for the already failed 'duct tape' lashing the cables to the refrigerant lines

Reasoning was sold to me at the hvac counter

Note: not a one and two family dwelling unit so not even properly secured TC-ER-JP would have saved the day with 336.10

At one point some of the mini-split units being installed here were supplied with a SJ type cord for interconnect and the instructions were to wrap the cable and the lines in a vinyl covering. We had long discussions with the manufacturers & UL {110.3(B) vs NEC. etc}. (turned out the units were not "UL" but "CSA"). One of our Canadian members can advise but we were told such an install was legal under Canadian Code,
Local AHJ would not accept it and various other methods have since been used (jacketed MC Cable, UF, TC-ER-JP)

This kind of thing should probably be addressed in some rational way. Cord is a perfectly safe way to wire these things up and the code ought to be adjusted to allow it.

It looks like in the joist bay to the left of the unit piping that the plywood goes to the deck. Is this supposed to be a fire barrier?

Interesting I have never seen a minisplit that came with SJ cord.

The thing that bugs me about the minisplits that take 30A OCPD on the outdoor unit, is there is no supplemental protection for the #14's that run to the indoor units.

To use something in the tray cable realm, the code has been adjusted see 336.10 ...allows for TC-ER-JP (residential limitation)

Otherwise say in the case of a Mitsubishi
"Connecting wires and the ground wire ...follow local electrical codes"

Looks to me like an old building with "balloon" framing and a new sub floor and framing is built out in front of it. They ran the line sets and cables down through the bay.
