Wall as part of wireway enclosure

I have a long box with an open back that I want to use as a wireway. I want to mount an outlet to the front, make all the connections inside, then run the wires to an end to connect to a plug. The open side of the box will go against the wall so that the wires are enclosed. Is this ok to do, using the wall as part of the enclosure and having wires run along it? Do I need to install an outlet box to make the connections in, or can I have that open to the wall? Should I just make another side so it's completely enclosed to begin with and, if so, would I need the outlet box in that case?

I have no idea about code stuff, I just want to make sure everything's kosher. Thanks!

Nick this thread seems DIY to me.

Sounds like you may be doing this the hard way IMO. Lotsa questions would need to be answered.

A premade metal wireway/trough with a flush mounted receptacle may be quicker, easier, and less prone for inspectors getting ansty about jury rigged equipment.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I hadn't considered skinning a commercial wireway since it seemed redundant to box a box, but that would certainly solve the code questions.

You shouldn't have to "box a box"; any number of folks supply raceway with the ability to mount a receptacle.
