I have a stair well in a residence that does not have a ceiling above it. It is located in a post and beam house. The stairs go down to a basement. I mounted a wall mounted fixture (looks kinda like a old lantern)on the wall in the stair well. My question, is there a code refernce in theNEC about fixture heights or would that be something that building inspector would look for. You can actually hit your head on the light if your not looking, but it's the only place to put it.

Re: Wall mount light fixture

Lighting fixtures can be mounted at any height, depending on the type you select. A good place to locate the most appropriate fixture for your situation: http://www.lightsearch.com/
Safety first, if you can hit your head with it, don't use it.

Re: Wall mount light fixture

Wayne this is a Building Code issue. There is a minimum width for stairs and the only thing that can encroach into this minimum width is the handrail(s) up to a height of 80" under the UBC. Other codes may vary. If the stairs are wider than the minimum and the luminaire doesn't encroach, then it's probably just a bad design and not a code issue.

Re: Wall mount light fixture

More than likely, if you could hit your head on it, the stairs are not wider than required and the light fixture is in violation of the building code.

We had a builder who insisted that we wire for sconce lights in the stairways. He wouldn't listen to us, as if we don't do this for a living, and needless to say, all of them had to be blanked-off.

Could you install lights in some of the the stair risers?

Re: Wall mount light fixture

I was going to install stair lights near the risers but the customer didn;t like them and they were expensive. He decided to take a chance and do it this way. I told him that we would probably pass electrical but the final building inspection would probably fail because of it. I have already bought him a round blank to cover it up.Thanks for the input, you confirmed my thought.
