I have a customer who has converted their wood burning fireplace to gas. I want to run my cable up through the ashtray similar to how I normally do for the insert installations. I plan to drill directly through the brick into the chimney, run mc into the basement via the ash tray, and place a piece of metal slip between the 2 NG liners and my mc to maintain distance. After that I will mount a wiremold box to the brick and put my receptacle. I don't see any code violations with the install as far as the NEC, but I'm not sure if there is an issue with drilling through the brick of the chimney even if it has been repurposed with NG liners. I am located in NJ if anyone local has insight on this.

That is probably true. Perhaps a moderator could move this thread. If anyone has done a job similar, some good feedback on this layout as far as penetrating the brick for a chimney that has been repurposed to a chase for a natural gas insert liner would be helpful. Thanks.

Is the chimney still directly handling the exhaust gases or is there a separate line run inside of it if for this purpose?

The chimney now has a separate liner in it for the gas insert. There is also an outlet installed in the firebox for the NG insert that passed inspection. I can maintain 6in of clearance from the new liners by putting a piece of slip in between them and my mc, so contact with the wiring isn't going to be an issue.

IMO you have a former chimney that is now just a chase, nothing wrong with fishing wiring through it as long as there is no conditions that would exceed temp rating of the wiring method. Punching holes in it only is a problem if you ever want to use it as a chimney again.

Thank you for the response. I agree with your reply. I think I may be over thinking it because it's different than what I normally do. This fireplace has a custom surround and moldings so there isn't any good clean path for wiremold or attic access to drop down above the tv. I also reached out to NJ code assist and the AHJ about this, so I will update this thread later today with the answers I am given from them.

Small update. The code official at the dca said using chimney is ok, just need to make sure cable maintains clearance from gas liners.

If using a single walled vent pipe that makes sense, if double walled pipe, that is what the double wall is for - preventing high temp contact with nearby items.
