wall mounted bath fan in shower permitted ?

Permissible if it's listed for wall mounting. Most of the ones I've seen say ceiling mount only.

Permissible even if it is within the footprint of the shower enclosure? With the switch outside? At a minimum it would have to be wet area approved unless very high on the wall.

well, the customer asked me to replace it, so I found a Hampton Bay "wet rated" (not damp location), and says it can be "installed to ceiling joist or wall stud" Of course, we re wired it to be gfi protected. So I guess we will keep it the same location, it is high on the wall and out of direct spray. There is literally no other place in this bathroom, I see why the builder (35 years ago) put it there. I was kind of surprised to see "wet location" with 'water droplets' on the label. Thank you
