I can't seem to find what is the allowable minimum height from the floor that a wall sconce can be positioned on a wall stud in the nec. I am aware that generally they are mounted anywhere from 66" to 72" from the floor.

I've heard something similar, and always roughed stairs accordingly. (I don't remember a request to put sconces in a hallway lower than my typical 80" - 84".

Is this rule in the IBC?

80"?! That's 6' 8" almost top of door height.

I've only done them old work, they were all typical candelabra-style candle holder with shades - height was bottom of shade eye-level with the Mrs.

Maybe we're mixing up terms. To me, a sconce is not the same as a wall mounted fixture you'd find above a vanity.

Right, I get what you're saying.

I leave it up to the H.O. or the GC, and certain rooms call for different heights, but in general I suppose I leaned a bit high for sconces. :)

On stairs and halls i think its a min of 6'6".Cant be having it hit our heads.
I can't imagine walking stairs with my head that close to the wall.

Around here, that would be about 5' even.

I normally see them eye-level. Just don't ask a guy nicknamed "Switcheight" to rough in the boxes.
Or "Lenny the Ladder".
