I have always beleived that the code states that in dwelling units in the applicable areas ANY wall space over 2ft you must have a recpt but now that I bought this handbook it is telling me the thing I have been arguing aginst...that it must be USEABLE. What is your opinion.

What year handbook did you buy?

"I believe the term usable was removed, effective 1999."

I agree the term usable is not in the current NEC

I bought the 2002 and yes I looked in the 99 code and it reads the same as the 2002 on the subject.

Handbook Commentary:
Isolated, individual wall spaces 2 ft or more in width are considered usable for the location of a lamp or appliance, and a receptacle outlet is required to be provided.

I now see what you are talking about, however the term usable is not being used the same as older codes used the term. In this comment it is being said that any wall space 2 ft or more in width is usable as far as a need for placement of a rec.

Travis, the verbiage in the NEC does not include the word usable, it is used only in the handbook. It makes no differance whether or not the space is usable, a receptacle is required if it is two feet wide.
