My inspecter require's all wall space in the utility room of a single family dwelling to be provided with receptacles as per the 6 12 rule. Also required is providing recptacles in any wall space over 2 foot wide unless equipment or cabinets are in that space. I would like to find out if this is an accurate interperation of wall spacing code.

Re: wall spacing; utility room

INHO, this inspector is not correct. Ask him to show you in 210.52 where it is required for that type of room. It is required to have receptacles if you have the laundry located there or a circuit for the water heater or heating equipment. With all that said, I would install one just because the area needs one but not because the Code requires one. This is a design issue, not a Code issue. :D

Thank you Charlie for the reply to the question posted. I appreciate your help with this issue.

Re: wall spacing; utility room

This an area that really needs to be addressed at some point in time.Exactly when the wall areas in a dwelling must comply with the provisions of 210.52.The words(similsr

Re: wall spacing; utility room

Sorry clicked add by mistake anyway,The words (similar room or area of dwelling units) leaves this pretty much up to the discretion of the AHJ.
There are rooms listed IE: living, dining, den etc. but the code doesn`t exclude a utility room either using these words (similar area)I have in one of my areas an inspector  That uses this part of 210.52 to require a receptacle on a 2 ft wall in places I would consider falling under a hallway spacing rule.I have tried to argue that this is only a hallway but he comes back with there is enough room to place a lamp table there and not obstruct the walking area so it falls under the 2 ft rule. I agree with you both that there is nothing in the NEC that requres a laundry room to comply, but there isn`t anything that says it doesn`t have to comply either

Re: wall spacing; utility room

Did run into this in Naples FL several years back.It was crazy and foolish to add all these unwanted or need receptacles.Would just ask AHJ to save time and money.

Re: wall spacing; utility room

Scott i agree it is baloney/bolagna but if there isn`t a code referance to go to where are you ,knee deep in it.Should the code be more specific or should the AHJ not have the right to determine at whim what is a simalar area.Come down here and fight it. The $30/60/100 fees add up when your company does 2750 homes a year.We are baby sitters for the help and the AHJ.You have NO idea ehat there is going on

Re: wall spacing; utility room

In 210.52(A)
In every kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, parlor, library, den, sunroom, bedroom, recreation room,
it list each habitable living space and this could have been defined with a definition in article 100. as we look on down to 210.52(B)(1)
In the kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, dining room, or similar area of a dwelling unit
we see that they added the pantry, breakfast room.

So I think for 2008 someone should purpose to add the definition for a habitable living space, or add it here to 210.52(A)

Re: wall spacing; utility room

Wayne I agree 100% there needs to be a clarification as to where the 2 ft rule needs to be applied,Rather than leaving it up to the individual AHJ`s discretion.I go to one county and
a wall needs a receptacle, same model different county none required  It`s multiple choice right now, uniformed my .........
