1. Were are you located?
2. Open the yellow pages call every contractor till you get an interview.
3. Visit every construction site, till you get an interview.
4. Visit every electrical contractor till you get an interview.

If the first answer given by Ches does not pan out.

A trade school is the best place to start. Go for Industrial Electrician.

Not saying it does not happen BUT I have never met anyone that paid the money these guys charge that was any good (I have only met two from trade schools).

For me it just seems foolish to pay the big bucks for an education the ABC, IBEW or other trade organization will give you for free.

I'd join the military first. When you get out you are guaranteed a spot in the IBEW.

When did the IBEW start giving out free lunches? the Military would be a good choice (navy) and you would want to be assigned to a repair department working on machines. IBEW might be good if all you want to do is construction jobs pulling wire and bending conduit. I got my start in the Navy and have worked with several Electricians that were trained by a trade school while going thru a 4 year Apprentice program Most if not all were good Electricians at the end of the 4 years. The money they spent for their education and training was earned back in a short time. I wasn't guaranteed a spot, I went to work for a Union shop company and after my 40 days I had to take a test and join the IBEW to keep working If I had failed the test I would have lost the job. I don't think there were any code questions on the test it was all theory best I can remember it was about 3 hours and several pages of question. In most cases you get what you pay for.

Charlie.

ABC, IBEW and other trade associations have apprenticeship programs that are paid for. PLUS NOTHING but NOTHING beats OJT.

25 year ago I decided to be an electrician, so I went into the personnel department of the industrial company I worked for at the time and asked for the list of classes that were required of the electrical apprentices there. After having completed about half of the classes at the local community college, a bid for an apprentice electrician was posted. I received that bid because they liked the initiative I showed by getting the education on my own. I would like to think there are many contractors that would like to give someone a chance shows that kind of initiative. One of the best decisions I've ever made!
