Guys what is your take On Warranties in the electrical business?
I personally have them in my company on parts and labor.
Do you think it would be a good idea to have extended warranties on our products and services for an extra amount?
What say You?

Selling a warranty is like telling someone that they should expect your work to fail. Give a warranty for your services but don"t sell one.

Our state laws require us to warrant any work we do for 2 years, if you would like to extend that, then I would suggest, extending it a a bit longer as good will.

We give a five year warranty it is a great sales tool

What type of items do you give a 5 year warranty on? It would be a safe enough bet on the building wiring and service but I wouldn't want to give a 5 year warranty on any fixtures with a ballast or equipment with motors ( exhaust fans, ceiling fans ) or any low voltage equipment.

I like the idea of a five year warranty but I would want some serious limits on what's covered.

The warrant work is on labor only, equipment and fixtures, are covered under the manufactures warrant terms, the law only requires coverage on the installation workmanship, for a 2 year period.

We warranty everything we provide which is all top grade so its not much of an issue going to five years. Alot of guys wont stand behind the cheap junk they install so offering the warranty gives the HO confidance in what you are proviing is top notch.

I think you have some ethical obligation to warrant the goods and services you sell for some period of time. A year is fairly typical.

Beyond that, they pay.

A friend of mine that does primarily residential and light commercial one-man jobs offers a "lifetime guarantee" and has for 30 years. No extra charge.

Works for him. Never been burned yet, but it helps that he never takes shortcuts and always makes sure the customer is 100% happy before he considers the job done.

Some states require registration and bonding for companies offering a guarantee.

I give a one year warranty on my labor, none on materials. If there is a manufacturer warranty on materials, I will honor that per the manufacturer's written policy. I find it rare to see any warranty on electrical products, however.

I pass on whatever the manufacturers offers to me.

I see no need to go above it.

There is a guy in my area who thought he was going to corner the market here by offering a lifetime warranty on his work. Really thought he was being original. Bragged quite a bit about this novel idea he had, or read about.

It didn't pan out that way for him, but probably spent a good bit of cash trying.

People are aware of loopholes, they aren't stupid.

service warranties

service warranties

On most calls, I assure customers " If you have any problems I'll come back"
When they ask me to install customer provided light/ceiling fans/ballasts/motors, I give them a salvage yard guarantee--- If it breaks in half, you are GUARANTEED to have TWO pieces!!!!. I usually get a smile. Very rarely have I had a problem. BULBS get the drive off guarantee---- guaranteed to work at least as long as it take me to drive off..

I gave a guy a lifetime warranty on a panel change last month just because he asked me for it.

He was in his 80's so I should be good

Seriously, you could give a lifetime waranty on a LOT of installations.

If electrical wiring is protected and not messed with, it lasts a very long time. I always think, "will this last 50 years?"
