I actually come across this with some degree of regularity.

The combination N/G vat didn’t even have a lightest would fit anything over a #4. It was a 200A meters in with 250Al

…vat didn’t even have a lightest…. ?

I’m not following your train of thought.

Yes, a bushing has been required for decades.🙂

I swear auto correct has been like a drunken methed up hooker that thinks she is really smart. 😡🙄😳

I’ll try again:

The N/G bar did not even have a lug, or a slot that would fit anything larger that a #4.

Yes, I was referring to the neutral landing directly on the can. 👍

This is another one of those things that I would never do and if I were an inspector I would fail someone for doing it but if I found it in my own house I'd probably let it be.

. . . if I found it in my own house I'd probably let it be.
I wouldn't.

That connection means that the neutral current that flows through the enclosure also flows through another connection, such as a bonding screw.

If that second connection fails, the entire EGC system becomes energized, just like the cabinet of a range or a dryer on a 3-wire circuit.

Yeah same thing could happen if the service neutral was open. I'm not justifying it, just saying I'm pretty lazy and won't fix stuff until it's broken really good.

Any chance there is a picture that includes all the equipment? WAG that it's not being used as intended. Suppose?

It’s definitely the neutral. Separate bare twisted ground to the ground bar.

I don’t have much success convincing people to upgrade the electrical system when there is obviously bad situations like that. As long as the lights are on, they don’t see the point in spending money for something they never see and don’t understand.

Bathrooms however….🙄 I regularly tear out out perfectly functional, very nice bathrooms, just to put a fancier one into its place. 😂

It ain't burnt down yet 🤷
This is the statement from every handyman and GC and homeowner that I come across with totally non compliant installations.

So lets just throw out the code book and let everyone do what every they want and if it doesn't burn down ok and if it does, oh well, better ;luck next time.

I've seen some wiring in third world countries
😜

Perhaps a lug kit is available?
