I wonder if this was ever legal in the past? what about conductors overheating? what other issues may this bring up?

Are you concerned about the bundling of the cables? If so, the sleeve is very short and should not of itself be a problem, since they spread out from there. Is it code compliant? Shooting from the hip I'd say yes. It's too late to get out the huge code book. However, I don't think I like it too much and I see some abrasion on some of those cables.

not uncommon practice before the code changed. Now each cable needs its own connector (unless rated for more). Most houses used to have a 2" pvc sleeve coming outta the top of panel just like your pic, all homeruns jammed into it. Im not sure when the code changed though

That looks like the top of one of the QO panels from his other thread. Clearly, the results of an upgrade or two, and myriad new-circuit additions. And, clearly newer than many of those cables.

I have never seen one of those setups in person. Must be a regional thing.

As Bob said it is still allowed and I know there are guys here that do it.

They had to put most of the cables in the nipple there were not enough ko's to use with the other piping crossing thru the dedicated space.:roll:

you're right maybe that was the only way thry could do it.Though i don't know when they did this, i don't think our state inspector would have approved it. My bet: they never called for inspection. They were bad about pulling meters around here.
