Architect wants to place a gas dryer and electric washer in a fire station bay rated Class I, Div II. They've done it on previous projects. I'm sure they will only occasionally be changing oil and such. Could they get away with it if the plans make it clear that a procedure must be in place to encure that hazardous activities only take place when laundry machines are not in operation? I know that automotive repair shops have welders and have to have procedures to use them.

why would changing oil introduce a hazard?

I don't know if that's the only maintenance/repairs they will do. "Go by" plans had the area wired per 511...but also showed the laundry.

On this project, it's now a non-issue, as the architect has responded to my questions with "they will not be doing any repairs."
Thanks

article 511
511.3 Locations.

(A) Unclassified Locations. Parking or storage garages where no repair work is done, except for the exchange of parts and routine maintenance requiring no use of electrical equipment, open flame, welding or the use of volatile flammable liquids are not classified and the requirements of Article 511 are not applicable.

The storage, handling or dispensing into motor vehicles of alcohol-based windshield washer fluid in areas used for the service and repair operations of the vehicles shall not cause such areas to be classified as hazardous (classified) locations.

So unless they plan on having someone take a torch to their $500K American-LaFrance in the bay, I don't see how 511 applies.

Thanks all! I bet the engineer for the "go by" set was just being cautious in specifying wiring per 511.

I've done several fire stations and been in several. Non-haz. Just like any other garage where all you do is park. Think of your home garage, parking garage, etc. - no different.
