You may be thinking of 422.34 but it would not apply to your water heater as it would not have a marked off position.

O olc Senior Member Jul 5, 2019 #4 Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if IRC (1,2 family and Tnhouses) (which I'm generally not involved with) may be different, but I just found the section and it looks the same as the NEC.
