Water Heater not working.

So here is the setup. I was called and asked to go check out this house. I was told the breaker was bad (plumber told customer was breaker and easy fix) water heater was not working. I arrive and open up panel and test. I have 240 off the breaker, go to the water heater, no 240. Well I get to looking and notice that I have #10 UF w/o ground at the panel but have 12/2 w/g romex at the water heater  . So trace around best I could.

Here are the holes I had to cut tracing wire down.

:p
:p

Burnt wire pictures.

Re: Water Heater not working.

I'm not going to say the plumber did it, but it looks like some work I have seen done by plumbers when the WH is relocated or replaced. :(

Re: Water Heater not working.

There was couple places I could look up into the ceiling area, so I had narrowed the area to a 2'x6' area. Started cutting on one side, only had to cut 4 holes to find it. Had to cut a 5th to pull in new wire. I was only there for 3 1/2 hours. Not sure how much the bill will be since "Office Lady" :p does that.

Re: Water Heater not working.

I take it that crimp sleeve was loose and causing plenty of arcing
