water pipe bonding

If a residence has interior metallic water piping, but the water service to the residence is plastic, does the electrical bonding of the water pipe need to be within 5' of the water entrance or wherever convenient? The water pipe isn't being used an electrode. This is for 99NEC/2001 CA. 250-104 doesn't specify where the bond needs to be and neither does 250-64(a),(b)or(c).

Thanks.

Re: water pipe bonding

Stacom: Above answer is correct. You are making a bond per 250.104 and not a grounding connection per 250.52 (A). The point of the bond connection only has to be accessible.

Re: water pipe bonding

Is this metal water piping under slab and at least 10'? If so it wouldn't mater if the feed to the house was pvc or not. 10' or more metal water piping incontact with the earth would have to be used as an electrode and connected within 5' of where it enters the building.250.52(A)(1)

Why make this harder than neccesary. Let's answer the question that was asked. There is no mention whatsoever of the pipe being under a slab. Read Ryan and Tom's answers and stop there.
