Weather proof box

Our inspection guy recently had an inspector fail him for a Bell box installation. The reason was the installer drilled through the back of the box into the masonary wall to secure the box. There are two round areas that are "there for this purpose".

The inspector said that the box is supplied with "ears" for the purpose of mounting and the drilling the back now made it no longer water proof.

It is most common that we use the clips included with the boxes for mounting. It is also common that we seal all openings and wall penetrations with silicone or caulk.

So is using those indentions in the back of a weatherproof box a violation?

Re: Weather proof box

The boxes I use have the little knockouts for this reason. This is a much better installation then those ears. If the inspector thinks the box is waterproof he obviously has never opened one up after it has been installed for a while. I believe they are referred to as "weatherproof".
Sounds like a typical headcase inspector.

Re: Weather proof box

If the job is well done and the box is adequately secured, I don't really care what exact method is used to attach the box. Bubble gum and/or double-sided tape is generally not approved.

I'm curious. Did the inspector open the box, remove the device, determine the box had been drilled, then re-assemble? Or did he just not see the ears and fail the installation?

Once again, we see a perfect example of wasting time. Now you will either need to install the ears or contact the mfr for an approval of the mounting method. Not only is your time wasted but so is the mfr rep, all because an inspector does not have common sense.

Re: Weather proof box

99 % of the time those silly ears strip off leave the box wobbly and loose.Sounds like your inspector has a bit of florida inspector flu ( Bryan no ofense to you) :D

Re: Weather proof box

the reason the ears are with the box is incase you install on a masonry surface to achieve the 1/4 inch air space.

I do not know what WP boxes you are working with but none of the ones I work with have a 1/4" air space and with or without the ears.

You can say that again. LOL

Many individual neon letters are self contained and only a primary whip is pushed through the wall. Where they are made up in junction boxes.

A service disconnect is located outside, either on the wall or on each letter as per 600.6.

No servicable components behind the wall. Yet, inspectors are requesting that a service disconnect be installed behind the wall also.

Easy enough to throw in a switch. But, damn!!! LOL
