Hello I have a customer that has a welder I looked at his cord and and ordered a receptacle for it I go to install it and realizes a non-grounding type 10-30 -r.
It’s an old Montgomery welder about 50 years old. My supply conductors are Rated for 50 amps.

The unit only has a 10 gauge whip original to the units

I Don’t really want to go and mess with the original cord.

How should I approach.

Older stick welders usually had heavy cord on them, and often 10-50 cord cap, maybe yours was lesser rating and only had 30 amp cord cap?

That said, seen many newer welders that come with 6-50 cord cap but only 12 AWG cord, so cord size alone doesn't always mean anything. Duty cycle I'm sure is what allows the 12 AWG cord on those, and most those newer ones do have thermal cut out so if you do exceed the duty cycle you will be waiting for it to cool off before you can resume welding again.
