Welding Cable?

Can welding cable be used to supply voltage from a 80 kw generator to the auto transfer switch? My supplier said he supplies this all of the time for this type if installation.

Welding cable, unless dual listed, is not permitted by the code for that purpose, but it is commonly used. There is at least one welding cable that is also listed as RHW making it code legal. Note welding cable is not to be confused with Type W flexible power cable which is also code compliant.

Use Type W Cable, its common for wiring generators and portable power.

Point out to your supplier Art 400 in the NEC, and uses allowed and not allowed.
