I have a house that has an 8 inch well head about 20 ft from the house, Mr inspector wants me to use this as a ground as well as my foundation #4 ground. Probably overkill but the homeowner is an excavator and will do most the work. (yea right)
My question is..
How do I attach the #4 to this existing well head?
I was thinking about a lug attached to a top head bolt, or maybe an 8inch water clamp? Thank you

You can use the 8" water line clamp, but by the time you get a price on that fitting, drilling and tapping for a lug on the well casing will suddenly seem very attractive. I think an 8" water bond clamp is almost 100 bucks.

Tell the inspector to bring his checkbook.

Don't forget about 250.112 (M) , I rarely see this done, but I generally drill and tap the well casing for this...

I assuming that you're speaking of a using the well casing as a grounding electrode for the service? Did the inspector quote a code article for this requirement?

You are correct sir, and no he did not give me a reference to boot, guess I should've asked. "Its the best ground you can get" were the words. I retreated to fight again another day...

He might be right. If the well casing was close enough, and the water line ditch was still open, I might even use it myself. It's just irritating when you're being told to use it. "All electrodes present"? Maybe that's what he's getting at.

Well, it is pipe, after all (250.52(A)(5).

BUT... I see now in the '05 code they put well casings specificly in 250.52(A)(7), and only items 1 through 6 need bonded together. I guess if the OP is still under the '02, then he might have to add it in to the grounding.

If you read post #5, that came from my 2002 handbook..., so not sure if that changes in 2005 also?
