What is the proper name for the wire that well pumps are wired with? it has three wires that are black, yellow, and red that wind around each other like a tri-plex. what is the advantage of using it over just using THHN/THWN? can it be direct burried? and in my area the well guys who install it pull it through some kind of black plastic pipe that is similar to pex, and then leave it exposed in the crawlspace, shouldnt it be sleaved where it exits the ground?

I think the type you are referencing is probally type TW with factory twisting, It's a lot thicker than THHN. I have also seen the type that Augie47 is referencing, it looks like thhn twisted together from the factory. I always change over to UF cable at the well, but if the drillers install it they use the twisted wire all the way to the pressure switch, without even installling a clamp or bushing in the hole!

yes, the insulation is very thick and rubbery compaired to THHN on the stuff I see used around here.

thats pretty much how the install looks here:roll:

I too am used to seeing the same type of twisted wire .
Today I was on a job that the wire going down to the pump was UF ,
I have not saw UF used going to the pump before.
This wire was installed by the well Drilling people.

The well drillers in our area usually run uf cable from the pressure tank to the well head and splice to the type of cable that the others mentioned. Some of the older pumps have a capacitor start pack that required a 3 wire system.
