Would you consider a ceiling fan installed under an outside overhang to be a wet location and needing GFCI protection? The fan is rated indoor/outdoor.

If it's cord & plug then 210.8(A)(3) "outdoors" would require GFCI regardless.
If it's hardwired I would think manufacturer instructions 110.3(B)

What you've described is not a wet location but is a damp location. See Article 100 definitions for the distinction between the two.
