Approved deck box, yes.

Depends on the length of the cord attached to the fixture.

Potting compound goes in the forming shell around the #8 bonding conductor termination, not the deck box.

1) yes, that is what the deck box is for,,to terminate the cord,,ask the pool guy how long the cord is,20'?look around the job site, sometimes they leave it,
dont cut the cord,,it gets roled up in the forming shell, then when it needs to be relamped,it can be removed without disconecting anything,,get the picture?
check the voltage on the pool lite!!
make sure you dont put 120v to a low voltage lite!!!(not that i've ever done that,,"not me")

2) yes, potting compound must be used in the deck box,if its less than 15volts,& flush with the grade,,check out=680.24(a)(2)(c)
if its 120volts,i'll let you read,680.24(a)(2)(a)&(b)

it's all about knowing the voltage of that lite,,,,
does it need to be 8" above grade ,,or can it be flush?

I agree. I completely forgot about the possibility of a flush mounted deck box.

What if the transformer is suitable for direct connection to underwater lights?

Intermatic px300 states this on the label.
