What constitutes a switch?

Hi again,
I had an inspection today in which I failed it because there was no illumination on an exterior door. 210.70A2b calls for a "switch controlled lighting outlet". Can this "switch" be a motion or dusk/dawn sensor or does it have to be an actual single pole switch? My gut feeling is that a switch has to be able to control the load in question on demand, thus a motion sensor is not sufficient Thank you in advance.

No it doesn't. I calls for a "wall switch-controlled lighting outlet." I don't think a motion sensor would satisfy that requirement.

Bingo. ^^^^. Right after 210.70(A)(2) lists the places you are supposed to have wall switches there is an exception to all of them if you use an "automatic control."

Don't you still need a disconnect means (switch) for that motion controlled light ? A lot of the motion sensors have an override where you operate the switch "off-on, off-on" within 2 seconds and the light remains on.

There are more means of automatic control then just motion sensors.

The override switch for the motion sensor you describe could be a requirement of the listing instructions of that controller though.
