Hey guys just getting in from a crappy day. We got back to the shop from a ditch digging job its amazing what a case of beer will git ya and theres a coworker loading his tools. He tells the guy I worked with our pm needs to see him. Well I know where this is going weve been slow so I wait around to wish the guy best of luck. Knowing in the back of my mind I have less senority than this guy. And also knowing the guy I usueally work with went out of town to help a guy he plans to work for fulltime at the first of the year. Of course Im the only one who knows this should I tell my pm? Its not like there are many open jobs in our area right now

DON'T SAY ANYTHING!!! What you know is your bisiness, and yours only, keep it that way. Not saying anything is not a lie, it's just not saying anything. A hundred things could go wrong for him, and he may have to come back to the same shop. Secrets that go unshared, remain just that, secret.

Do I understand this correctly?

A coworker told you something in confidence and you are wondering if you should go and tell the boss?

If that is the case IMO you should say nothing.

If what this guy dose, and it doesn't effect yours or someone else's safety or causes destruction of property, it is not your place to say any thing to any one.

Wow, I can't believe you're even thinking about this. You've gotta keep your mouth shut, it's not your place to say anything about anything.

When FRIENDS talk, it stays between them unless otherwise specified. Period.

Right here.
There are just some people you'll work with over the years who are perpetually "quitting" even though they've worked at the same place for 20 years, have other jobs seemingly lined up all the time, and who even accept other job offers only not to follow through. General rule of thumb for life; believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.

your guy may come back to no job and may have changed his mind or the circumstances be different for other reasons.

There are several quotes above that I agree with.

I am looking for people with integrity, and I will tell you that "tattling, ratting on" or whatever it is called, is not a good attribute. Not telling is not a breach if integrity. You very well may be next. I agree with Marc about the people who are perpetual quitters... I've worked with them, and I'm sure you have too.

Take it for what it is worth... just a bunch of words.

It really is not your place to say anything, and no one likes a snitch... your boss will not trust you as much, neither will your co-workers. You have nothing to gain, and a lot to lose.

Thats what I did I just hate to see a guy with a family get laid off when theres another guy who plans on quitting in a week. Hopefully he comes back hears about dude getting laid off and decides to turn his notice in. That way dude can support his family

As far as I might go is to say something to the guy that "might" be leaving. As Marc said there are perpetual job hunters out there. I had that situation arise a several years back, mentioned to the guy that told me he might be leaving. He called the shop and told the owner that he was going to turn his notice in in a week. The owner actually kept the guy he had planned on letting go and the guy that was leaving. He let him work out his 2 week notice for almost 3 weeks. Owner told me later it was worth to help a guy out that would stand up like that.
