What does the F stand for in FS and FD weatherproof boxes?

The question was asked to me, and I could only offer an opinion. I'm pretty sure the S means shallow and the D means deep. I think the F means flush ...but I'm really only guessing.

I combed the NEC, the White Book , and many catalogs and could not find what I was looking for.....Does it exist or was it just some letter given to the box for no particular reason?

Thanks,

Thanks,

You talking about a weatherproof device/JB box?
Wondering because we call them FS boxes.

Edit: I would not think the F would stand for "flush", since they are surface mount boxes.

I thought it may be flush because you can install flush mounted devices.....again it was just a guess.

I believe the F stands for "fittings" in other words it accepts fittings ( elbows,45's, etc. ) and the S is for shallow and D is for deep.

I could be wrong but I know the S and D are correct.

I believe that is exactly where it originated but at this point we can get plastic FS boxes. :)

How the world is "a changing"

Years ago I downloaded a PDF from one of the manufacturers that discussed just this topic. Maybe when I am not as busy I will try to find it. I just took a quick look and it seems over the years I have downloaded a little of 234 gigs of info, in 1876 folders onto my different hard drives...

According to Crouse-Hinds customer service, it stands for Feraloy, which is the material used for the boxes.

Feraloy? alloy
Feraloy, a Crouse-Hinds proprietary gray-iron alloy, offers strength, versatility, adaptability and economy. Cast iron generally resists corrosion from alkalies, organic compounds, neutral and slightly acidic solutions, and certain concentrated acids and neutral brines. Cast Feraloy products are normally supplied with a finish of electrogalvanized zinc plate covered with an aluminum acrylic paint.

Since it appears to be proprietary, the only true FS or FD boxes are those manufactured by Crouse-Hinds, or by others who have purchased the rights.

Plastic FS boxes?? What's the world coming to?

db

I have also been told it could mean Function Shallow Box / Function Deep Box.

I don't know where the term "function" fits into the electrical terminology world??

I agree its F for Ferrous.
