I just purchased Bookkeeper 2005 from CompUSA and it doesn't have credit card or loan information accounts you can setup. Does anyone have any suggestions for what type of bookkeeping software is sufficient for small business electrical. I am sole owner so don't need fancy $499 dollar Quickbooks. Does anyone have an Excel spreadsheet for this and I am also looking for some type of estimating worksheet I can use on the job for putting an estimate together.

thanks for your help guys...

My advice is don't go to cheap on your software. you may grow into Quickbooks if you don't need it now. Quickbooks is about the least I would recommend

Re: What Electrical software do I need?

As a sole prop you may find Quicken rather than Quickbooks sufficent for your needs. It is cheaper and will allow you to upgrade export to Quickbooks if you later change up. It has credit card tracking ability, a basic checkbook ledger, and some fair reports capability.

Quicken-what about invoicing and other business related accounting features, does it have those too?

Actually, I am using MS Money Deluxe and Business but it is a pain in the _ _ _ with all its fancy menus and advertisements that keep popping up, it has an invoice feature, etc... but trying to make changes to the way the software works isn't easy. Big pain in the _ _ _. So I am trying to find something to use with less fancy frills and whistles. I have Quicken Basic but I am not sure it will do what I want...

Re: What Electrical software do I need?

We use a product called Businessworks. It's not cheap. We can invoice, A/P, A/R, Payroll, Inventory and print numeros reports.
My accountant said NO WAY to "downgrading" to Quickbooks.
Peachtree is a decent program also.
For the best advice, talk to your accountant. They probably have a favorite that they like and can refer you to a local contractor who uses the software.
Don't go cheap. You'll upgrade and be sorry because you should have gotten the better program now.

Our accountant actually recommended we switch from Businessworks to QuickBooks because QB has more features the BW.

I found QuickBooks does in fact have many more useful tools then Businessworks. We are glad we made the change.

Steve:
My wife (book keeper) took a class on Quickbooks and was not impressed. Maybe(?) it was the basic version (dumbed down) that the community college has for class purposes. Either way, I have had 2 CPAs stear me away from QB.
I read and use the reports. I do not enter the data.

Re: What Electrical software do I need?

There is a huge difference between QB Basic and QB Pro. I guess the best thing to do is some research on the products available and compare.

QB also has very extensive reports and graphs. I find QB to work best with all of my forms and checks.

It?s all preference...

Have a good one.

Steve

Re: What Electrical software do I need?

Get advice from a CPA, not a bookkeeper. Do not make the mistake of oversimplifying an area of your business as critical as the accounting. The business side of an electrical contractor is about 60% of the responsibility of the business, this only leaves 40% to actually furnish and install electrical product.
