Ok, I just went to work with a new company, and I am being told it's common practice to 90 conduit out of the wall, cut the pipe off as close to the wall as possible, typically on the bend.....beat a beat on bushing on it and slam a 4 square over it without a connector. To me I don't see how this is legal, when chasing masons or roughing in walls I always had the foresight to plan for a connector and a box. Anyone know of a code reference I can use to support my idea that this is the "hackiest of the hacks". I always strive to ensure every piece of conduit I install is properly bonded/grounded. I understand it is part of the EGS, but I cannot find anything anywhere that specifically says a connector must be used or a ul listed device must be used to connect a conduit (emt in this instance) to a box. Please help I feel like I need to say something to the foreman.

Sounds like hack work to me.

300.10 Electrical Continuity of Metal Raceways and Enclosures. Metal raceways, cable armor, and other metal enclosures for conductors shall be metallically joined together into a continuous electrical conductor and shall be connected to all boxes, fittings, and cabinets so as to provide effective electrical continuity. Unless specifically permitted elsewhere in this Code, raceways and cable assemblies shall be mechanically secured to boxes, fittings, cabinets, and other enclosures

Welcome to the Forum. :)
the actual situation is a masonry box for a receptacle, a stub up of pvc, a female adapter, an emt 90 hacked off with a plastic slip on/ beat on bushing installed through a ko in the back of the box and mounted over the pipe. props to protecting the wire from the edge of the conduit, but i would find a way to make a connector work. exception 1 of 300.10 seems to apply even if it is shotty work. Short sections of raceway....

250.4(A)(2) and (3) seem to apply in this case, but the exceptions on the other references seem to apply as well.... I do not see how anyone could be hurt from installing it this way, i just think unless its in a health care situation it may be acceptable. This actually really bothers me. It should be wrong, and I am having a very hard time accepting that it is an acceptable practice.

That only applies if there is a cable in the raceway not individual conductors.
