Hypothetical situation,

A guy wants to provide for his family. He is trying to make a name for himself.
He prides himself as a law o bidding, Patriotic, hard working family man.

He has not advertised in the Newspaper or phone book yet.

Though he knows it is wrong and illegal he has, from time to time, put business cards on vehicles in Hardware store parking lots.

He might have been putting business cards in peoples mail boxes. Suppose he got a phone call from a angry homeowner regarding the supposed solicitation.
Technically it is a Federal offense to open a persons mail box.

If this happened should the person head to Canada. Is it plausible that a court action could take place?

It sounds like you gave many good reasons not to do it.

I seriously doubt you get put in jail for it but I ain't no lawyer.

Worst case, the postmaster from the town will call you and chew you out. I have a feeling the grouchy old guy got it out of his system, and you're square now.

although this doesn't answer your question it is something to think about. it is legal to leave pamphlets, etc. at residences providing you do not leave them in mail boxes and/or mail slots. you can visit a residence providing there isn't a 'no trespassing sign'.

"3.1.3 Use for Mail
Except under 3.2.11, Newspaper Receptacle, the receptacles described in 3.1.1 may be used only for matter bearing postage. Other than as permitted by 3.2.10, Delivery of Unstamped Newspapers, or 3.2.11, no part of a mail receptacle may be used to deliver any matter not bearing postage, including items or matter placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle. Any mailable matter not bearing postage and found as described above is subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were carried by mail."

Well since you had good intentions when you were out on your crime spree why didn't you cut out the nonsense and just rob a bank?
In our state all you have to do is say "I did it for the children" and the bleeding herts will all go all a flutter and you will be on your way.

I send out postcards it's cheap and easy and I guess legal. Maybe the grumpy guy would like to get one EVERY DAY!

Instead of fleeing to Canada, I suggest you come here to Florida where crime is encouraged by poor policy making...

And the weather is better...

Are you sure this isn't for the big blue drop off boxes? 'Cause I get crap in my mail box all the time. And recently went petitioning door to door, and no one was home I dropped a flyer in the mail box... (I'm trying to get a stop sign for my street....)

The mail receptacle, is your mail box, years ago I put fliers in about 300 boxes, thought nothing of it, they had a new mailman on the route with a postal inspector with him, they remove every flyer they found, and brought them back to the Postmaster, I get a notice in the mail, go to the post office, told it's not allowed, and read the regulation, warned not to do it again, I guess the first time is free.
