Taking NYC electricians exam Saturday 2-3-07 came across this question:

What is the voltage of a battery suppling power to a prime mover without overcurrent protection?

Thanks for your help!

had the same section.
Prime movers shall not be solely dependent on a public utility gas system for their fuel supply unless:
(a) it is accaptable to the authority having jurisdiction.
(b) the gas system is listed.
(c) the gas system and electrical utility are jointly owned.
(d) there is a probability of a simultaneous failure of both gas and electrical systems.

I cant get over this site! very addictive...later, John

john,
looked at your question, the only answer that made sense to me was listed (a)

what is a prime mover

Remember, when taking this type of test you are often given more info in the question than is required for the actual answer.
It would seem to me that the que stion is not about a "prime mover".
It is asking what is the battery voltage.
Battery voltage is figured at 2v per cell for lead -acid type or 1.2 per cell for alkalai type..

I am confused now, I thought we were talking about question from smith tool guy. That question had nothing to do with battery just about gas supply for primary mover. Did i miss something?

this could be 24V dc, as those diesel engines run like those truck engines. we have diesel prime movers in 30MW gas turbines also, and they have a 24V dc supply from batteries (lotsa them) so the turbine could do a black start...

What would be the answer to this?

700-12 (B)(3) Exception lists both a and d.

I moved to answered A. In the exception, it states a "low" probability which is why I didn't like said answer D. Thanks for the help. Dave.
