Article 680 swimming pools... part V fountains section 52 junction boxes and other enclosures subsection (B) underwater junction boxes... subsection (2) installation subsection (a) states "Underwater enclosures shall be filled with an approved potting compound to prevent the entry of moisture." The potting compound appears again in 680.56(C). I am aware that the word approved means okayed by the AHJ; but, and I mean no disrespect by this because I certainly am unfamiliar myself, I don't believe my inspector has any clue about this code section or the exact definition of "suitable potting compound". If someone is familiar with a brand name product(s) and a better description of its installation requirements than the code provides, I think the outcome will be better than if I was to put the AHJ on the spot for his somewhat binding opinion. At least I'll have some idea what to suggest.

What is most important beside the fact that you do not want to lose water from the pool is that you still need to be able to remove the light for repairs. Use a product that remains pliable and do not use too much.

I have used both the 3M and the Aquabond. I prefer the Aquabond for ease of installation. I buy it in cartridge form instead of the 2-part packs.
