I'm assuming you are not talking about grid distribution, and instead about distribution owned by a utility customer (such as within a building).
Colloquially, I think people are often referring to feeders when they are talking about distribution. The Article 100 definition of "Switch, General-Use" does suggest that branch circuits are different from distribution.
Switch, General-Use. A switch intended for use in general
distribution and branch circuits. It is rated in amperes, and it is
capable of interrupting its rated current at its rated voltage.
