Check with the authorities in the area you seek inspector work. Typically, construction inspections are required pursuant to an enabling legislation enacted by a governmental body. Usually a Certificate of Occupancy is required prior to occupying the building. A precondition of the issuance of the Cert.of Occ. is evidence of an electrical inspection that substantially complies with the code. More and more, inspectors are required to demonstrate competency by successfully passing tests and meeting hiring requirements which vary town by town, state by state. Good luck.

In Los Angeles you don't need anything. Although ICC certification is a big plus. The best Inspectors here in L.A. are former tradesmen. They will hire without ICC certification and and train you and send you to classes. All L.A. inspectors who've been on the job for over a year have multiple ICC certs.

California is transitioning to i-codes and getting ICC certified would be a good idea.
