What is the code for doing electrical in a 90% new house? Only 10% of old electrical remains in the house and is not listed on the blueprint. Do I have to run all new electrical in that house or can I just tap in to the existing wireing. Is the+re a code requirement for this application?
Arthur. :(

Re: What is the code for this?

You're not going to find anything in the NEC.
Even if where you live they have adopted Article 80, it's not going to require you to change much if anything. 80.9 and 80.11 would be worth reading

There may be other codes where you live that apply

Sounds like your up to something? The old can stay if it was legal at the time and not unsafe. All of the new must comply fully. Why would you not want a complete new system if only 10 % from it?
Is this one of them deals were they can't tear it down and rebuild the same ?,but remodel is ok.

Re: What is the code for this?

In a case such as this the first thing to do would be check with the AHJ. When I have a question on a application I discuss it with the AHJ when I pull the permit. The AHJ appreciates being asked first and not suprised later.

Re: What is the code for this?

Electrical is only a portion of the building code. Building code allows existing portions of a building, WIRED TO THE EXISTING CODE AT THE TIME OF INITIAL INSTALLATION, to remain, as is, so long as the existing walls are not disturbed. If you gut the room, you gotta bring the electrical up to new code. (not to mention the plumbing and mechanical).

Earl,

To further clarify, could additional loads be added to the existing previously compliant wiring? Or would that mean the wiring in that circuit would now have to be updated if necessary?

Not sure what he trying to do here.Seems strange to want to save a few circuits.
Do know that down here if a building suffers more than about 60% (believe that number is accurate ) damage that the entire building must be brought to code.
We recently had a house that from an electrical fire suffered something to the tune of $100,000 in damage they were having a problem with the county over rebuilding because the home was only worth about $160,000.Insurance company fought this.It was impossible to meet the elevations now required.
Maybe if he tells us what he is involved in we can help better.

Re: What is the code for this?

This is a jurisdictional situation, meaning each area has local requirements. Contact the building department and ask what they require.
In Westchester, NY - this situation would require that the ten percent be evaluated and possibly upgraded - definitely smokes, carbon monoxide detectors , etc...
