What is the "f" factor?

The Cooper Bussman SPD book explains and gives an example of calculating short circuit current using the "point to point" method. I can do the math ok, but just don't understand what the "f" factor and the "M" factor is telling me.
Would appreciate your help.

It is taking the impedence of the cable (or bus) into account to give you a reduced fault current at the end of the cable compared to the secondary of the transformer.
