What is this? An old bonding bridge and grounding rod?

1) I noticed this and was wondering what it was. I think it is an old bonding bridge and grounding rod.

It is underneath where the old electric meter was installed. A new meter with a grounding rod has been installed.

Video link: Video of the device

This is my own home.

2) Can I remove it? It is not attached to anything above ground. Would it connect to anything "important" below ground?

You can see the old meterbox's wire to the right of the new meter's conduit.

BTW, that is probably asbestos siding! The house I grew up in had that exact same siding. Real popular with the FHA funded remodeling.

Thank you! I hadn't thought about that. I figured it was asphalt.

I do have plans to rip off all the old siding as it has wood siding underneath (at least the wood that isn't rotted).

I agree abandoned ground rod from a lightning protection system . The braided conductor is a dead give away.

There was wood lap siding under mine too, but the contractor pulled it off and laid it flat, then put the other siding on top of it.

Looks like lightning protection system cable. Any lightning rods on the roof? May have been just what they had laying around.
I used to see lightening protection or the remains of those systems on old houses and barns. I never see it anymore. I wonder why they stopped installing them. Were they never really needed in the first place?

I wondered that myself.

I actually saw a van yesterday that was a lightening rod installer. Surprising. This was near Asheville, North Carolina.

Is that siding flexible, like asphalt shingles on the roof? Or stiff panels that will shatter if hit heavily? The stiff asbestos/cement panels are legal as long as you don't disturb them. AFAIK, you can paint them, but don't sand them.

Trying not to disturb the asbestos siding?
:) All the siding is coming off, but first the electric and then the septic--it needs a new one.

And then the roof--its a tear off project w/rafter work.

And then floor joists and then the siding. The ceiling tiles also in the house look like they could be asbestos.
