What is this GFCI protected circuit?

Recently I stumbled upon a blog which states that adapting existing knob and tube wiring to GFCI protected circuits is a better safety method. Since we are having knob and tube wiring in our house we would like to change it. But before that I want to know what exactly this means. Can anyone help me in this?
