Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding getting a apprentice license.
I've been doing industrial maintenance for about 10 years which includes maintaining of production and plant equipment mechanical and electrical, fabricating, plumbling, installing of new equipment which includes the running of new circuits, updating old wiring systems, working with and programing of PLC (programmable logic controllers) , seting up and programing of multible varible frequency drives.
I have my one year certification in electricity and I was in the process of getting my degree in process control and intsrumentation.

But from what I gather from reading utahs requirements I don't quite understand were I would fit in since never worked under a licensed electrician and I've been doing industrial maintenance ever since started school.
So I'm a little lost with were I would fit in with getting one.

getting that license

getting that license

Hi.

Are you a student or a sparky?

If you are in the process of getting your degree and you are close, go with that. If you only have minimal work in the trade with your hands, then I suggest you forget about that for now. You say that you have the years of experience, and that is great, but could you have gone out and done the work on your own?

As far as an apprentice license, that doesn't seem feasible for the long term. No one wants to hire an apprentice to start/finish projects. I have never heard of a specific license for an apprentice.

Having a ton of experience with the tools can qualify you as a decent electrician, but if you dont have the HANDS ON problem solving skills, then this could be a problem in the trades. Electricians are some of the best stand alone problem solvers that I know, but I might be a little biased :)

Journeyman License

Journeyman License

...also of you have the chance to get a JW license, DO NOT pass that up even if it takes years ! I feel that having a JW ticket is one of the best things I ever did.

Having gone back to the classroom, I really can see how valuable the good electrician is. I have only one semester left for my EE and all of the companies that I have interviewed with drool over the JW ticket that I carry in my pocket. Well, I shouldn't boast, but they do like it. It has opened many doors to say the least.

At last, good luck with your decision making process.

I'm both ( I have good days and bad days)

I have the experience or hands on with industrial and residential wiring but I have forgotten alot of what I learned in code class I took about ten years ago. But plant maintenance doesn't require knowing code. "you don't use it you lose it" ( for example I could wire a whole house but probably fail because of code) But I'm not against re-learning it or be treated like dumbshit because I did take code.

Like my wife will say do you want me call an electrician to change that light bulb or can you handle it.

Well the verdict is in plant maintenance means nothing to the licensing community.
Even though I maintain and service all plant electrical and machinery it's not considered hands on training. even though I have troubleshooted, repaired and installed 208/240/480 v 3ph systems too 5 vdc control systems.
Plus my one year electricity certification means nothing what a waste of my time and money.
Where was that crystal ball when I needed it.
